Menlo School
Atherton, CA
Menlo requires the Star Assessment as part of its admissions process for both middle and upper school applicants. Testing is administered on-campus, and scores are submitted through Ravenna.

Exam Overview
The Star Assessment, developed by Renaissance Learning, is a computer-adaptive standardized test that measures student proficiency in reading and math.
Unlike fixed-format exams, it adjusts difficulty in real time based on student responses, providing a precise academic snapshot. Originally used for classroom monitoring, it is now a required admission test for select competitive Bay Area private schools. The test features 34 multiple-choice questions for each section: reading and math, with no writing component.
Effective preparation focuses on strengthening underlying reasoning and comprehension skills rather than rote memorization, often involving diagnostic evaluations, practice tests, and targeted tutoring to build test-day stamina and mastery.
Adaptive Format
Because the test adapts in real time, two students of different ability levels may see different questions, but both receive scores on the same scale. Performance is measured by precision, not raw difficulty.

Bay Area Requirements
The Star Assessment is currently required for admissions at a number of competitive Bay Area private schools. Requirements can change year to year, so always verify directly with each school before applying.

Portola Valley, CA
Woodside Priory is a Benedictine college-preparatory school requiring the Star Assessment for admission. On-campus testing dates are available once an application has been initiated through Ravenna.
Los Altos, CA
Pinewood uses Star Assessment results as part of its admissions evaluation. Families should confirm current policies for the grade level they are applying to.
Our Method
The Star Assessment rewards students who read with precision and reason mathematically with fluency. Our preparation builds those underlying skills, not just test-taking technique.

Preparation built from your child’s real reading and math performance.
01
Every engagement begins with a diagnostic that mirrors the adaptive structure of the Star Assessment, establishing where reading and math skills actually stand.
02
We match your child with a tutor based on academic fit, personality, learning style, and temperament.
03
We build reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning, and the ability to sustain focus under adaptive pressure.
04
Timed, full-length practice tests give students experience with the real environment and reveal patterns in both reading and math sections.
05
We prepare students for testing-room expectations, adaptive question difficulty, and pacing across both sections.
06
Sessions are available in person at our Burlingame and Woodside offices and online for families across the Bay Area, Silicon Valley, and beyond.
Family Stories
“My son had never heard of the Star Assessment until we found out Menlo required it. We had six weeks. Cardinal Education ran a diagnostic immediately, matched him with a tutor who actually understood how adaptive testing works, and by week four his practice scores had jumped significantly. He walked into test day calm. That alone was worth it.”
“What I appreciated most was that they didn’t just drill practice questions. They worked on my daughter’s reading stamina and how she approaches passages she finds difficult. Her scores improved, but more importantly, she stopped panicking when a question felt hard. That shift carried into her other schoolwork too.”
What is the Star Assessment, and how is it different from the SSAT or ISEE?
The Star Assessment is a computer-adaptive reading and math test developed by Renaissance Learning. Unlike the SSAT and ISEE, which are fixed-format tests, the Star adapts to each student’s ability in real time and is administered on-campus at the applying school.
How do I register my child for the Star Assessment?
Registration is handled through the school’s admissions portal, typically Ravenna. Once your application is active, the school will provide available on-campus test dates.
What is a good Star Assessment score for private school admissions?
Scores are reported as scaled scores, percentile ranks, and grade-equivalent levels. For competitive Bay Area private schools, scores above the 75th percentile are generally solid; the most competitive applicants often score at or above the 90th percentile.
How far in advance should we start Star Assessment test prep?
We recommend starting at least three to six months before your target test date. Shorter timelines can still produce meaningful improvement, but earlier preparation allows us to build genuine skill rather than relying only on strategy.
Can my child prepare for the Star Assessment alongside SSAT or ISEE prep?
Yes. The academic skills tested across the Star, SSAT, and ISEE overlap significantly. We build integrated preparation schedules that prioritize each test according to your child’s timeline and target schools.
Do you offer online Star Assessment test prep?
Yes. Online sessions are available for families anywhere on the Peninsula, in Silicon Valley, and beyond. The quality of preparation does not change between in-person and online formats.
We’ll review your child’s target schools, run a Star Assessment practice test to establish a baseline, and outline a preparation plan built around your timeline.
