Understanding the Challenge

What Are Learning Differences?

Learning differences are variations in how a student’s brain processes information. They’re not a measure of intelligence. A student with dyslexia may struggle to decode text but think in ways that are genuinely sophisticated. A student with ADHD may find it hard to sustain focus in a traditional classroom but show remarkable creativity and intensity when engaged.

Learning differences include dyslexia, ADHD, dyscalculia, auditory and visual processing difficulties, and executive dysfunction, among others. They are common, they are manageable, and with the right support, they are not a ceiling. For families navigating demanding academic environments from elementary school through the college application years, the difference between struggle and success is almost always the quality of the support around the student.

Core Philosophy

The Right Support Changes Everything

Your child is clearly capable. Teachers say so. You see it at home. But something about school isn’t clicking, and you’ve spent months, maybe years, trying to figure out why. By the time most families reach us, they’ve already tried a tutor or two, made adjustments at home, and had more conversations with teachers than they can count. What they haven’t found yet is a team that genuinely understands how to support their child to become successful. That’s what we do.

We Start With the Student, Not the Diagnosis

We spend serious time getting to know your child before we design anything. What subjects light them up? What conditions make focus harder? What have they already tried, and what actually helped? The answers shape everything.

Character Development Is Central

At Cardinal Education, we believe that students with learning differences don’t need less challenge. They need the right challenge, delivered in the right way, with the right support around them. Our goal isn’t to compensate for your child’s learning profile. It’s to help them understand it.

We’ve Done This for Over Two Decades

More than 20 years of working with Bay Area families means we’ve seen every learning profile, every school culture, and every stage of the process. And we know how to help students build the skills and self-confidence that make the difference between getting in and actually thriving once they’re there.

Our Process

How We Work With Your Family

01

Understanding Your Child

Before anything else, we listen. We talk with you and, where appropriate, directly with your child about their learning profile, their history in school, what’s working, and what isn’t.

02

Building the Right Team

Depending on your child’s needs, we assemble the right combination of coaches, tutors, and specialists. We’re deliberate about what we recommend and honest about what we think will help.

03

Personalized Program Design

We build a program according to your child’s profile, goals, and school environment — specific skills to develop, subjects to address, a sustainable session cadence, and measurable targets.

04

Structured, Consistent Sessions

Every session has a purpose. Students with learning differences benefit most from consistency, structure, and coaches who know them well enough to adapt in the moment without losing the thread.

05

School and Home Integration

We work with parents to reinforce systems at home and, where appropriate, coordinate with teachers or learning specialists at school. The goal is a coherent support structure around your child.

06

Progress Review and Honest Feedback

We check in with parents regularly. What’s improving? What’s still a struggle? Does the program need to change? We tell you what we see, including when something isn’t working.

About Cardinal Education

Many firms focus on strategy. We focus on character.

Cardinal Education has spent more than two decades working with students across the Bay Area and Silicon Valley, from families in Atherton and Hillsborough to students in San Francisco, Marin, and the East Bay. In that time, we’ve worked with hundreds of students with learning differences across every profile: dyslexia, ADHD, dyscalculia, auditory and visual processing difficulties, executive dysfunction, and combinations of all of the above.

What we’ve learned is that the students who make the greatest gains aren’t the ones who receive the most intervention. They’re the ones who develop genuine self-understanding. A student who knows how their brain works, what conditions help them focus, how to ask for what they need, is a student who can succeed anywhere. That’s what we’re building.

Our team includes specialists with deep experience working with students with diagnosed learning differences, coaches trained in multisensory instructional approaches, and admissions consultants who know exactly how to navigate the disclosure question for each school and each family’s situation. We work in person across our Bay Area offices and online for families wherever they are.

Frequently Asked Questions About Learning Differences Support

When should we start?

As early as you can. The habits and skills that support students with learning differences take time to build, and the earlier they’re established, the more they compound. If your child is in elementary or middle school and already showing signs of struggle, now is the right time. If they’re in high school and you feel like you’re playing catch-up, we can still make a significant difference. We meet students where they are.

How is Cardinal Education’s approach different from other programs?

Most programs for students with learning differences focus on remediation: fix the weakness, close the gap. That matters, but it’s not the whole picture. We focus on the student. We spend serious time understanding how your child specifically thinks, what specifically derails them, and what they already do well. Then we build a program that works with their profile, not against it. Character development is woven into everything we do.

What types of learning differences do you work with?

We work with students with mild to moderate ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, auditory and visual processing difficulties, executive dysfunction, and other learning profiles. Many of the students we work with have more than one of these, and some have no formal diagnosis at all but are clearly struggling in ways that standard school support isn’t addressing.

Should we disclose our child’s learning difference during admissions?

It depends on the situation, and we’ll give you an honest answer specific to your child and the schools you’re considering. In general, disclosure is not required, but in some cases it provides important context that can actually strengthen an application. The more important question is which schools have the programs, culture, and flexibility to genuinely support your child once they’re enrolled. That’s where we spend most of our energy.

Do you work with international families or families outside the Bay Area?

Yes. We work with families across the US and internationally through online sessions. The process is identical: assessment, personalized program, structured sessions, regular parent check-ins. Many of our international families are navigating US independent school or college admissions with a child who has a learning difference, and we have extensive experience with exactly that combination.

How do we get started?

The first step is to schedule an initial private consultation. We’ll talk through your child’s learning profile, their history, and what you’re hoping changes. If we think we can help, we’ll tell you exactly what working together would look like. There’s no commitment required for the consultation — just an honest conversation.

Let’s Talk About Your Child

You’ve Probably Been Carrying This Longer Than You Should Have.

Watching a capable kid struggle and not being sure whether to push harder, back off, or find something you haven’t tried yet. Executive function coaching, subject tutoring, test prep, admissions strategy — we can help with all of it. But the place to start is understanding your child’s specific situation.

We work with a small number of families at a time. Spaces are limited each enrollment cycle.
