Exam Blueprint
The High School Placement Test measures verbal ability, quantitative ability, reading comprehension, mathematics, and components of written language to gauge an 8th-grade student’s readiness for rigorous private Catholic high school environments.
Unlike independent school exams with multiple testing divisions, the HSPT is administered to a single age group: 8th-grade students applying to grade 9. The test may be taken only once. If multiple tests are taken, the lower score is considered to be the final score.

Preparation matched to the pace and rigor of competitive Catholic high school admissions.

Our Method
We do not use a generic, pre-packaged test curriculum. Instead, we run an individualized, data-driven strategy designed to conquer the HSPT’s immense time constraints.

Every HSPT plan begins with clarity about pacing, readiness, and point loss.
01
We begin with practice tests modeled after the actual HSPT to assess baseline strengths, identify weaknesses, and build test familiarity.
02
Focuses on comprehensive grammar, essential English conventions, writing instincts, and critical thinking.
03
Aligns middle school math with HSPT-specific requirements, including Roman numerals and rapid pattern recognition.
04
With approximately 30 seconds per question, students need specialized strategies to improve speed without sacrificing comprehension.
05
Builds stamina to finish all 298 questions and maximize raw score by decisively answering every item before time runs out.
Success Stories
HSPT 95th Percentile — Accepted to Bellarmine College Preparatory
“Even though our son is a straight-A student, he struggled with the extreme pacing of the HSPT. Cardinal Education gave him the specific test-taking strategies he needed to get through all 298 questions confidently. He scored in the 95th percentile and was accepted to his top-choice Catholic high school.”
HSPT Scaled Score Growth — Accepted to Sacred Heart Schools
“Our daughter was completely unfamiliar with the logic questions and sequence patterns on the HSPT. Her Cardinal tutor broke down exactly how to approach these unique sections. The targeted practice completely shifted her mindset, and her scores went well beyond our expectations.”
Spaces are highly limited each admission cycle. Early preparation yields the most consistent score gains.
Do I need to study for the HSPT if I get good grades?
Yes. The HSPT follows a highly traditional curriculum, but many concepts included in the test, like logic puzzles or Roman numerals, are not normally covered in modern American middle schools. Even straight-A students require preparation to excel.
How many seconds do I have to answer each question?
You only have about 30 seconds to read, understand, and answer each question. There are 298 questions that must be completed in 2 hours and 21 minutes. Speed is critical, but comprehension is key.
What is considered a good score on the HSPT?
HSPT raw scores are converted into percentiles. The 50th percentile is average, the 24th to 75th percentiles are considered middle average, and the 76th to 99th percentiles are considered high and are typically required for elite admissions.
