Understanding Test and Timeline Management
Private school admissions run on a fixed calendar that most families underestimate until they’re inside it. Applications open in September and close between November and January. Decisions are released in February or March. The SSAT, ISEE, and HSPT all have their own testing windows, score reporting timelines, and retake policies. Layer those onto a student’s existing academic workload and time commitments, and the calendar gets crowded fast.
Test and timeline management means building one coordinated plan — which test, when to sit for it, the score range to target, and how test scores fit alongside every application deadline, so nothing gets missed, and nothing gets rushed.
Choosing the Test
SSAT, ISEE, or HSPT — Which Test Does Your Child Need?
Not all private schools accept the same test scores. Some require the SSAT. Others prefer the ISEE. Catholic and select private high schools use the HSPT exclusively. Making the right decision early on prevents wasted time and unnecessary stress.
SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test)
The most widely accepted entrance exam for independent and boarding schools. Tests verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, essay writing, and reading across three levels. Wrong answers subtract points.
ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam)
Accepted by many independent schools, particularly on the West Coast. No penalty for wrong answers. Includes an unscored essay sent directly to schools, which admissions committees review closely.
HSPT (High School Placement Test)
Used primarily by Catholic high schools for admissions and scholarship placement. Administered once per school, in November or December of 8th grade. One sitting, no retakes.

The Private School Application Timeline, Grade by Grade
Grade 6 Entry
Diagnostic test by spring of Grade 4. Structured prep begins summer before Grade 5. By the time applications open in September of Grade 5, your child should be finishing prep not starting it.
Grade 9 Entry
Diagnostic test in spring of Grade 7. Structured prep through summer. Most families targeting competitive schools should have completed at least two complete full-length practice tests under timed conditions before the start of the application season in September. That requires starting no later than June.
Catholic High School Entry
Students can only take the HSPT once. No retakes. The same score is submitted to other Catholic schools a student is applying to. Test prep should be completed by August or September of Grade 8.
Score Targets
What Score Do Selective Private Schools Actually Expect?
Published score ranges are averages. Competitive applicants score above them.
For the most selective schools, 90th percentile and above is expected for all tests. For slightly less selective schools, 85th percentile and above is the target. This applies to all tests.
The goal is never just to hit the published average. It is to score well enough that the test is never the reason a strong application does not move forward. We complete a full diagnostic before setting any score target, because how much prep time your child needs depends entirely on where they start.
