Exam Blueprint
Understanding the Independent School Entrance Examination blueprint: the ISEE is a standard metric used by selective independent schools to evaluate a student’s mathematical, verbal, and analytical reading capabilities.

Preparation calibrated to the academic expectations of selective independent schools.

By the Numbers
| Exam Parameter | Middle & Upper Level Details |
|---|---|
| Total Testing Time | 2 hours, 40 minutes. |
| Total Question Count | 160 multiple-choice questions, plus one unscored essay prompt. |
| Core Stanine Scoring | Scaled scores are converted into a 1 to 9 stanine scale. |
| Percentile Ranking | Compares your child strictly against a highly competitive peer applicant pool. |
| Elite Benchmarks | Highly selective schools typically screen for 7, 8, or 9 stanines. |
Core Syllabus
Features 40 questions split between synonyms and sentence completions. Evaluates advanced vocabulary and contextual linguistic logic under a rapid-fire 20-minute time constraint.
Comprises 37 questions measuring mathematical intuition and logic, including word problems and quantitative comparison matrices that test abstract conceptual relationships.
Contains 36 questions across 6 passages, measuring main idea extraction, authorial tone analysis, supporting detail recognition, and logical textual inference.
Features 47 curriculum-aligned questions testing concrete mastery across arithmetic, algebraic equations, coordinate geometry, and data analysis.
A 30-minute response to a prompt. While not assigned a numerical score, the raw copy is sent directly to admissions committees to benchmark authentic composition mechanics.
Unlike the SSAT, the ISEE does not penalize incorrect answers. Leaving a question blank is a major mechanical error; maximization requires completing every bubble on the sheet.
Our Method
We do not believe in mass-market test prep strategies. We build an individualized instructional roadmap based on data-driven diagnostics and what fits your child’s needs.

Every plan is built from your child’s own diagnostic data.
01
We start with a full-length proctored simulation to isolate where your child is losing points and categorize mechanical errors versus content gaps.
02
Focuses on structural word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and sentence-context decoding to master sentence completions without relying on blind guesswork.
03
Builds structural fluency in translating dense word problems into clean equations and teaches the estimation strategies required for quantitative comparison questions.
04
Establishes predictable annotation frameworks and passage-skimming strategies so students can manage the tight time-per-passage constraints.
05
Trains students to eliminate definitive traps, maximize scoring efficiency, and ensure no bubble is ever left blank on test day.
Success Stories
8th Stanine Score — Accepted to Menlo School
“Our daughter was consistently hitting 5s on her practice ISEE math blocks. Her Cardinal tutor isolated that her issue wasn’t the math itself, but the layout of the quantitative comparison questions. Once she mastered the logic behind those specific prompts, her scores climbed straight into the 8th stanine. She was accepted to her top-choice school.”
Upper Level Mastery — Accepted to Harvard-Westlake
“The vocabulary depth on the Upper Level ISEE was incredibly intimidating for our son. Cardinal didn’t waste time with endless flashcard drilling. They taught him the underlying Latin roots and contextual clues needed to decipher unknown words under pressure. His 9th stanine in Verbal Reasoning sealed his admission.”
Spaces are highly limited each enrollment cycle. Early preparation yields the most consistent score gains.
When should we start ISEE preparation?
The ideal preparation runway is four to six months before the official test window opens. This timeline provides enough space to fill systemic math curriculum gaps, build an advanced vocabulary library naturally, and run multiple proctored practice milestones to stabilize testing anxiety.
How does the ISEE differ from the SSAT?
The core differences are mechanical and structural. The ISEE features sentence completions instead of analogies, incorporates quantitative comparisons in math, and does not feature a guessing penalty. Because the scoring metrics differ completely, we use our initial diagnostic matrix to help families determine which test naturally favors their child’s cognitive strengths.
Do you offer online ISEE tutoring?
Yes. Our synchronous, one-on-one virtual classroom program delivers the same curriculum and matching parameters as our in-person options. We work with families globally across the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Washington D.C., Singapore, Dubai, and Switzerland.
How do we get started?
Submit a consultation request below. A senior director from our team will contact you within one business day to review your target independent schools, discuss your testing window, and coordinate your child’s diagnostic tracking exam.
We partner with families globally to deliver the premium competitive testing margins required by elite independent schools. If your target institutions require a top-tier stanine profile, the strategic time to start preparation is now.
